A Pristine and Precious March

REDLANDS Like polar ice caps in summer, most people's hearts could melt at some point of "March of the Penguins." If it's not for the sincerity of witnessing thousands of emperor penguins march like lemmings 70 miles through some of the world's most frigid climate just to mate, then perhaps it's the point when two penguins meet and seemingly, humanly fall in love, adoring each other and doting over each other.

Belly Dance, American Style

Tribal Cafe 2005 will being a weekend of belly dancing workshops and performances to Redlands' Mitten Building Hundreds of belly dancers will converge for a weekend of workshops and performances Aug. 19 through 21, when Tribal Cafe 2005 comes to the Mitten Building in Redlands.

The Role of Religion in the London Bombings

London is in a right crisp little mood as these words are written, and the blistering temperatures do not help. Today it must have been at least 70 degrees and the locals really do not know what to do with such unaccustomed sunlight. For a visiting Californian this is very heaven, but the locals cannot believe it. Many of them peel off as many clothes as is decently possible, and wander the chartered streets looking like a race of albino lizards out for their one visit per year to the blue sk...

Moon Party at County Museum

REDLANDS The San Bernardino County Museum's education division and the San Bernardino Valley Amateur Astronomers will host a Moon Party from 8 to 9:30p.m. Saturday, Aug. 13, at the museum to observe the first-quarter moon. Admission is free.

Good Acting Triumphs Over Evil in Lifehouse Theater's Oliver'

He is born to a woman who loved him deeply but died shortly after his birth. He is left at a workhouse run by Mr. and Mrs. Bumble, who consider him to be nothing but another mouth to feed. It seems the future is grim for Oliver Twist, who has nothing to carry him through life except the one gift left by his mother words inscribed on the back of a locket: "The ways of the Lord are right."

Tosca' Takes the Stage at the Bowl

REDLANDS Puccini's homage to the classic melodrama will come to the stage of the Redlands Bowl Friday, Aug. 12, when producer and artistic director Frank Fetta brings "Tosca" to the Redlands Bowl Summer Music Festival. The opera tells the story of singer Floria Tosca, a tortured heroine who meets with a bad end in true operatic style, by throwing herself from the battlements of an Italian palazzo. Redlands Bowl soprano favorite Shanna Blake Hill will return to the Bowl in the title role.

Warning: Leave Conventional Expectations at the Door

As an avid museum-goer, I have finally met my match. The Museum of Jurassic Technology in Los Angeles is one of the most bizarre, confusing and incomprehensible collections I have ever encountered. And therein lies its charm, for people who appreciate the decidedly offbeat. I had heard about this museum from both an intellectual friend, who loved it, and my son, Michael, who enjoyed it but predicted I would not because it was too "post-modern" for my tastes.
