Moon Party Saturday Night at the County Museum

REDLANDS The San Bernardino Valley Amateur Astronomy Club and the San Bernardino County Museum's education division are hosting a Moon Party 7:30 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 10, at the museum. Many telescopes will be set up to observe the first-quarter moon and reveal the face of the moon up close. There is no charge for the Moon Party, which will be held outside the museum near the parking area.

Gary Spisak's Glass Art On Exhibit

REDLANDS Southern California artist Gary Spisak, noted for his beautiful kiln-fired glass, is the featured glass artist for the month of September at the Redlands Historical Glass Museum. The Stan Files Beleek collection is also featured this month as the Member's Collection of the Month.

New American Art Form

Our Town Editor There is an argument over the legitimacy of tribal fusion-style belly dance. Some say it is not really belly dancing. Local tribal fusion instructor Rachel Lazarus Soto pays little mind to the debate. She says belly dancing, tribal fusion or not, can change a person's life.

Once Upon a Mattress' Opening in Yucaipa

YUCAIPA Heartland Players presents "Once Upon a Mattress," a family-oriented musical comedy version of the classic fable "The Princess and the Pea." Take a Field Trip to the Ice Age

REDLANDS Registration is open for a San Bernardino County Museum field trip to explore ice age lakebeds in the Mojave Desert. The Sept. 17 trip will be led by Eric Scott, curator of paleontology, and Chris Sagebiel, curator of geology.

Blues at the Castle' Coming to Kimberly Crest

REDLANDS Tickets are available for "Blues at the Castle," the first of two fall concerts at Kimberly Crest House and Gardens, to be held at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 10. The second event, "Folk at the Castle," will be held Oct. 22.

Little Women' Strikes Just the Right Chord

Our Town Editor Allan Knee could do very little to add any conflict to Louisa May Alcott's classic novel about the March sisters, but Jason Howland's music makes "Little Women" an endearing and entertaining tale that is suitable for audiences all ages.

Workshop On Reincarnation Slated Sunday

REDLANDS Tom Hagman, president of the Parapsychology Association of Riverside, will lead a workshop on reincarnation 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 11, at the Redlands Spiritual Treatment Center. The workshop will include hypnosis and past-life regression. It is recommended that students bring a floor pad and pillow so they can stretch out on the floor.

Another Canyon Development Threatens the Peace

After more than 6,000 citizens showed their outrage for over development in the Covington Project, the Planning Commission has on its agenda the approval of yet another development in the canyon. The Bonita Project is a development of 26 houses on 60 acres southwest of the Covington Project. Kilpatrick Just Looking for an Excuse to Attack a Liberal

James J. Kilpatrick takes E.J. Dionne Jr. to task for using the word fatwa to describe the Bush administration's attack on "Massachusetts liberals." ("Got a quick definition of fatwa?" Sept. 5, 2005.) Kilpatrick's ostensible thesis is that the word is so obscure that Dionne did not convey his meaning "accurately and understandably" to his readers.

Don't Make Use Drive to Find Wal-Mart Bargains

Redlands does need a Super Wal-Mart. Why not keep the revenue in our city? We sure don't want to drive (considering gas prices) to out of town Super Wal-Marts. The Redlands Wal-Mart is busting at the seams and it is about time we build a Super Wal-Mart. Just think of the gas you'd save 'cause you can grocery shop there, too. And prices are very reasonable.

REDLANDS Environmental Review Committee members sent a cellular tower disguised as a lone power pole back to the drawing board Tuesday. AT&T Wireless had proposed building the 60-foot tower on private residential property on Live Oak Canyon Road.

Contractor's Yard Near Sports Park Approved

REDLANDS A contractor's yard near the site of the planned sports park got an OK from the City Council Tuesday. Larry Jacinto had proposed building a new contractor's yard that would replace his existing facility on Wabash Avenue, across the street from Crafton Elementary School. The new facility will be further north on Wabash Avenue, just east of a grove that he owns at the northeast corner of Wabash and San Bernardino avenues.

Redlands Schools Welcome New Orleans Transplants

Staff Writer REDLANDS Sean Duffy started school on time this year, despite the fact that his home in New Orleans has been flooded and his school has damaged ceilings and blown out windows.

Jeanne Richards Frey

Jean Ann "Jeanne" Richards Frey, a former resident of Redlands, died of leukemia Aug. 24 at her home in La Mesa. She was 59. She was born Dec. 23, 1945, in Washington, D.C., and graduated from Palos Verdes High School 1963.

Rebecca Jimenez

Rebecca M. Jimenez, a lifetime resident of Redlands, died of a heart attack Monday, Sept. 5, at Redlands Community Hospital. She was 90. She was born Aug. 25, 1915, in Redlands and attended Redlands schools.
