Clerk Grazed by Car of Robbers Fleeing with a Case of Beer

REDLANDS - Robbers who escaped from a gas station mini-mart Sunday morning with case of beer also grazed the store clerk with their getaway car on the way out, according to police. Redlands police were notified of the theft at about 2:30 a.m. by the Sheriff's Department, according to police logs.

Children's Book Author Visits Library

REDLANDS - If you give Los Angeles author Laura Numeroff the opportunity, she will grace you with her presence. Numeroff, author of several books including "If You Give A Mouse A Cookie," "If You Give a Moose a Muffin" and "If You Give A Pig A Pancake," was treated to a book signing at the Heritage Room of A.K. Smiley Library on Oct. 17.

Islamic Expert Speaks to University Students

REDLANDS - Islamic expert Reza Aslan spoke last week to a full house at the Orton Center at the University of Redlands. His was the fifth of 10 lectures in "The Many Faces of Globalization" series sponsored by the university. Aslan is an expert on Islam and the Middle East, holding degrees from Santa Clara University, the University of Iowa and Harvard University. He is a doctoral candidate in history of religions at the University of California, Santa Barbara.

Rau Promoted in Zurich-Based Firm

Brendan Rau, son of Dr. Richard and Carolyn Rau of Redlands, was recently promoted to the position of assistant claims manager at the New York City office of Swiss Re, a leader in global reinsurance, which is based in Zurich. Rau has been employed by Swiss Re since November 2005.

Jennifer Jacobs, Daniel Judelson Will Marry

Retired Lt. Col. Michael and Marilyn Jacobs of Redlands announce the engagement of their daughter, Jennifer Ann Jacobs, to Daniel Adam Judelson, son of Denise and Alan Judelson of Northford, Conn. The couple will wed June 8 at the Harbor Inn in Point Loma.

Women's Fraternity Seeks Music Items

REDLANDS - Sigma Alpha Iota international music fraternity for women, Riverside-San Bernardino Counties Alumnae Chapter, seeks sheet music, music books, instruments and recordings for its annual music sale. The event will take place from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 10, and from 8 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 11, at the University of Redlands Music Building to raise funds for a music scholarship and philanthropy.

Gas Station Easily Recognizable

Last week's "Recognize This?" photograph was easily recognized by several readers as the Redlands Oil Co., owned by the Wilson family. "That's the Redlands Oil Co., Henry Wilson's gas station," said Duane Pool. "That's cater-corner from the Redlands post office on Brookside Avenue. All the Redlands post office vehicles gassed up there, and I carried the rural route and used to gas up there myself. There was also a garage operated in the back."

Michelle Seymour Weds Scott Mccauley

Michelle Seymour, daughter of Gary and Pat Seymour of Redlands, became the bride of Scott McCauley, son of Barney and Eileen McCauley of Carmichael, Calif., Sept. 16 at St. Francis of Assisi Church in Sacramento. Father Bonfiglio of Sacramento and Christen Seymour, brother of the bride, co-officiated the ceremony. A dinner buffet for 200 guests followed at the Tsakopoulos Library Galleria.

Soaring with a Nobel Peace Prize Winner

Redlands resident Tim Brown had to rack his brain for a moment when he learned the name of the Indian man awarded the Nobel Peace Prize earlier this month. The laureate, economist Muhammad Yunus, and his Grameen Bank serve the poor of Bangladesh though "microcredit." Grameen promotes credit as a human right.
