Clunkers Are Cash for Local Dealerships

REDLANDS - The government's "Cash for Clunkers" program has infused more cash into local car dealerships. Hatfield Buick/GMC owner Bill Hatfield said there has been a noticeable increase in customer traffic on his lot since the Car Allowance Rebate System, or CARS program - its official name - was announced July 1.

Council Approves $80 Million Housing Authority Project

REDLANDS - The City Council unanimously approved a project Tuesday that could breathe new life into the north side of town. The Housing Authority project will redevelop a 19-acre property on the northeast corner of Lugonia Avenue and Orange Street, where a complex of one-story apartments now occupies the property. The Housing Authority plans to develop a newly-planned complex with 228 multiple-family and single-family homes.

Web Site Maps Redlands Crime

REDLANDS - Residents wanting to know where crimes occur in the city have a new online tool to deliver the information. In June, Redlands began offering a crime-mapping service providing up-to-date information on crimes in the city. The hosted Web site - Crimemapping.com - uses information provided by the Police Department to show crime data in maps that users can customize.

Helicopter Airlifts Man From Santa Ana River Wash

REDLANDS - Police and firefighters needed the help of a sheriff's helicopter to airlift a 51-year-old man suffering from severe dehydration from the Santa Ana River wash Tuesday evening. At about 8 p.m. Tuesday, Redlands Police received a call of a suspicious vehicle in the remote wash area near Riverview Drive and Church Street. Residents said a woman visited a house on Riverview Drive asking for water but did not indicate medical problems, said Redlands city spokesman Carl Baker.

Surveillance Cameras Aid Redlands Police in Shoplifting Arrest

REDLANDS - Police arrested a shoplifter Tuesday with a little help from an electronic eye. An employee of Devi - a clothing store at the corner of State and Fifth streets - reported a shoplifter just after 4 p.m. Tuesday. Redlands city spokesman Carl Baker the employee claimed the woman stole several dresses.

Wal-Mart Detractors Vist North Redlands Visioning Committee

REDLANDS - The North Redlands Visioning Committee hosted a group that says Wal-Mart would be bad for Redlands. Wal-Mart executives are planning a 214,000-square-foot Supercenter near the intersection of Tennessee Street and Lugonia Avenue. The Good Neighbor Coalition - a group protesting the project - visited the NRVC's Monday night meeting to present reasons the project could be harmful.
