With Armed Forces Day having just concluded and Memorial Day fast approaching, I thought I'd share the story of Emory Ewart Watchorn, the World War I aviator whose death at age 25 in 1921 inspired his father Robert to create the Lincoln Memorial Shrine and donate it to the city of Redlands.

Emory Ewart Watchorn, or Ewart, as he was known to family and friends, was the only child of Robert and Alma Watchorn to survive to adulthood, their first son, Robert Jr., having died as an infant.
