Growing Celery Here Isn't Easy, but Can Be Satisfying

Summary

Celery (Apium graveolens var dulce) is a biennial, native to Europe and Asia, usually found in marshy grounds by slightly saline rivers. Celery, a biennial grown as an annual, is low in calories and carbohydrates and high in potassium. It is also hard to grow from seed. It must be planted in late summer for growing in the cool season; earlier planting could result in the celery going to seed (bolting) during the hot weather. Heat induces seed dormancy and the seeds do not germinate.

Growing celery successfully in our area is an exacting task that requires rich soil and lots of water, as well as a long, cool growing season. The crop is ready to cut 90 to 120 days after transplanting the small seedlings.
