For me, the holiday season always brings up thoughts of Christmas breaks from teaching as well as some of the most vivid experiences that preceded them. One year, I was hired as a consultant to provide Montebello High School teachers with a process to infuse writing across the curriculum and to help the school achieve the goal of making students become more effective writers. While 82 percent of the respondents indicated that their writing improved, 18 percent had other concerns.
Most of the negative responses went something like this: "I didn't think this was an English class." "This was a waste of time." "I've done this before." "Too much work and it is boring."
