Greg Pelly concludes ("Leave prayers out of July 4th," July 8) that we should put religious life and civic festivities in their "rightful places." It is, he asserts, un-American to include a Christian prayer at the Fourth of July celebration held at the University of Redlands stadium.

Hmm. This is a democracy, right? That's part of what we celebrate each year. And polls have consistently shown, right up to now, that a super-majority of Americans identifies with the Christian tradition and the Bible. So, simply on this basis it is reasonable to include a prayer at the opening of the show.
