Summary

She was born Ginger Lei Collier, named after the beautiful ginger leis given to welcome visitors to her birth state of Hawaii. Influenced by the tropical beauty around her, she started drawing at an early age. Flowers, palm trees, dogs and girls in pretty dresses filled her school notebooks. Later moves with her parents to the states of New Mexico, Colorado and Nebraska instilled in her a love for wilderness areas, and mountain scenery began to appear in her sketchbooks.

After graduating with a bachelor of science in recreation, Ginger married Richard Pena in 1982 and moved with him to Riverside. Ginger obtained a teaching credential and taught school for a couple of years, and also worked as a biological technician with the Forest Service at the Forest Fire Laboratory in Riverside. A near-fatal accident proved to be a turning point in her life as she turned to painting to express her delight in the birds, flowers and mountains she was privileged to still enjoy.
