Meg Whitman, the billionaire former eBay chief executive who poured tens of millions of her own fortune into her first-time bid for political office, easily won the Republican primary for California governor Tuesday, advancing to face a Democratic icon, former two-term Gov. Jerry Brown.

"Republicans are fired up to support Meg Whitman in 2010," Party Chairman Ron Nehring said in a news release. "Whitman has proven herself to be not just a formidable candidate with a proven track record of creating jobs and getting results, but also a visionary leader who has the answers to fix the bloated bureaucracy in Sacramento and help put California back on the track to economic recovery."
