Summary
Barnes & Noble is finding extraordinary success here itself in its opening days. In many ways, I am happy for this success, because it is evidence of the towns addiction to, or reliance upon the printed word. It is refreshing to see long lines for books in a society that has become so audio-visual. And the stores clientele will surely grow when the high schools, colleges and universities return from summer dormancy.
I write this, however, to inform or remind readers that every successful business brings with it leftovers and slough. Economists call these pieces of waste waste that businesses leave to be cleaned up by those who care "externalities."See the full content of this document
