We were delighted to see the Planning Commission react negatively to the Walgreens proposal. However, we believe there are additional, important issues to consider.
Yes, the Planning Commission was correct in noting that such a business would not be consistent with a pedestrian-, consumer- friendly downtown. What was not noted was that a drive-through, any drive-through, has serious defects. They are very energy inefficient with cars idling their engines while waiting in line, the engine noise and fumes are not conducive to strolling by or outside eating nearby. In fact, we would be delighted if Redlands had the courage that a few other cities has shown, by banning all future drive- throughs simply because of their negative environmental impact.See the full content of this document
