South Africa - From Animals to Apartheid

Summary


The safari was over and we were all heading back to Johannesburg, South Africa for our flights home. Since air travel is sometimes unpredictable in South Africa, I scheduled an extra day in Johannesburg; I have been through Johannesburg several times, but I have never stayed long enough to see the city.

Johannesburg is the most populous and richest city in South Africa. The "riches" can be traced back to the discovery of gold in 1886 and to diamonds found in the Witwatersrand mountain range in and around "Jo'burg." People flocked to the Johannesburg area and the small pastoral town changed overnight. Shantytowns sprang up around the city and Johannesburg became the "gold capital of the world."
