Zanja History has Not Always Flowed Gently

Summary


The historic Mill Creek Zanja, the oldest continually used man- made irrigation ditch in California, turned 189 years old in 2008. California Historic Landmark #43, it was also placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1977. Its existence, however, has been as turbulent as the flood waters which it occasionally carries.

Concerns about maintaining the historic nature of the Zanja began to form in earnest during the 1960s, and a 1970 call by the Redlands City Council for a hearing about converting the ditch to a full- fledged east-west flood-control channel sparked an energetic movement to save the Zanja for future generations to enjoy.
